Mercedes Schlapp must deal with an administration that is roiled by a variety of issues, including a president acting as his own director of communications and Cabinet Secretaries who are caught up in the controversies surrounding their respective departments. Schlapp has been keeping an eye on the target, and has been coordinating the implementation of policy along with White House staff from the department of legislative and political affairs and policy shop in addition to broader communication. The focus has been on matters such as the safety of schools, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. Schlapp's current job doesn't involve many interactions with reporters. She received a lot of press attention after she was announced as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks, the communications director. The battle has been brutal. Schlapp has sided with Tony Sayegh. He was a candidate. They started fighting in media. Schlapp claimed that after she was informed that when the Washington Examiner ran a story that contained negative comments about Sayegh, she had a discussion with him.
